Life on the Other Side if you Never Give Up on Recovery Now with Kim

Cameron had a life-altering stroke March 21st 2012, the day after her 52nd birthday. After extensive rehab she returned to work, but now, part time. The death & rebirth of her old self, has been a journey of faith, never giving up, & some good old humor. It’s also helped to get involved with serving others. Cam facilitates a stroke support group, worked on a stroke walk, has 3 FB pages relate to stroke (Second Chance Stroke Survivors, Thriving Stroke Survivors, Miracles in Progress Stroke Support). She wants every survivor to know, you don't need to sit at home. There are things you can do to help yourself. Get out!  It doesn't matter what you do. Join a support group, it’s the best free thing you could ever do. Seek new hobbies. When she looks back to where she started & what she's become, she's got a life worth living. So take the word can't out of your vocabulary & make every day matter.
This show is a gathering place for anyone seeking recovery from the challenges of life on life's terms. I introduce topics, and survivor's share their experience, strength and hope. We discuss useful tools that have helped us lighten the load, of our journey through recovery.
More will be revealed! Tune in, stop in and call in. This is a "we" recovery program, because it is in the "we," that we find the new "me."
We focus on the four A's of Recovery: Awareness, Acceptance, Action and Adaptation. This is a place for survivor's striving to become thrivers.
The front half of show is a featured guest. to join us in the discussion. The second part of the show is Open Mic and some great Indy Music, sure to inspire!

BRAIN INJURY AWARENESS - THE THIRD PERSON EFFECT

A SISTER TOLD ME WE DON'T RECOVER FROM BRAIN INJURY WE REBUILD!

The hardest part about rebuilding oneself after brain injury for me is: In order to rebuild properly you have to see how ugly the current behavior is.

One of the effects of my brain injury (mine was a major brain aneurysm and stroke) is what I call the third person effect.

I find my own behavior so out of character so way not me and so wrong I can only liken it to or describe it to a non brain injured person like this. It's like watching your own behavior as a third person.

I find myself fixating and having emotional outbursts on something or insisting I'm right when I couldn't be more wrong!

Even after repeated attempts by loved ones telling me how wrong I am!

Unfortunately this realization doesn't happen until after I realize I have really hurt loved ones. I find this to extremely hurt inside me.

Am I alone with this issue?

If it was not for the true and faithful love of my family, I would have been placed in a home long ago!

But I, unlike many of my fellow stroke survivors around the world who are rejected by spouses and or family members because of their stroke I am loved like no other!

I'm a very grateful man for my family that steadfastly love me!

With love,
Aaron

A STROKE SURVIVOR CAN BE TAUGHT

Yes! A stroke survivor can be taught!
Morning my peeps!
So over the last few days I've been learning about just how powerful Twitter is!
It appears to be the #1 Social Media hub!
So I'm using it to tell the world about us!
So peeps ............. follow me on Twitter!

I'M A STROKE SURVIVOR, IT'S WHO I AM NOW

Hi I thought you may want to know who I am.
Currently Age: 52
Born September 1st 1963
Age 47 when I had a major aneurysm and two weeks later had a major stroke:
September 17th 2010

The day the course of my life changed forever!

Deficits: Can’t walk, Dysarthria, Balance issue
Married 22+ years to one of the most awesome and amazing women on the planet! Rebecca Avila
Father to the most awesome son on the planet!
Ryan Avila 22

Born and Raised: Santa Rosa California
Adopted by Verne and Nonie Avila

How I truly feel:
I was the type of guy that could do about anything I set my mind to. Cutting down a 80’ tree….no problem! Designing a water or rain harvesting system…..no problem! Running a crew building a 100,000 gallon water storage tank…………..no problem! Running and owning my own companies National Storage Tank and Rain Harvesting Solutions Inc. for over 12 years BS (Before Stroke) done!

Then the course of my life would change forever!
I was doing the day to day grind and I truly believe there was only one thing that would stop me dead in my tracks! A stroke and near death experience!
This event in my life forced me to fully re-evaluate all the things I, like most everyone, took for granted!
Life itself, walking, talking, feeling one with my body, family, friends but I truly believe that I've been given a SECOND CHANCE!

I would come to believe wholeheartedly that this was a type of gift! Yes this stroke is the hardest thing I would ever face!!! But I was alive! Given a gift that the majority of people on this planet don’t have! The chance to live two lives in this one! A second chance to learn not to take it all for granted!
In beginning part of me was so angry, suicidal, and felt ripped off but what I have learned since my stroke makes it all worth it! I should have a big sign on my forehead…….Under Major Reconstruction! I’m far from learning it all!

I would have to say and know with all my heart that if it was not for my incredible family and friends and their support I’d be in a much different place!
Tears of thankfulness run down my face! Go stroke survivors!

WE'RE NOT VICTIMS WE'RE SURVIVORS!

Never Give Up!

With allot of care!
Aaron Avila
