SIMPLE THINGS LIKE WRITING - CONNIE PHIPPS

Every other day I work on skills most 41 yrs olds take for granted like writing. Most have no concept of how awkward holding pens or pencils are after your dominant hand stops being so dominant. Even forks, spoons, knives & holding a cup become strange feeling - all normal everyday activities. Other Stroke & TBI survivors will understand this.

A STROKE SURVIVORS SLEEPING ISSUE

If there is what appears to be a common thread among stroke survivors from around the globe is a sleeping issue has arisen after stroke.

Not good when all the neuroscientists agree that the only time our brains repairs itself is when we sleep.

So get this...............

I can honestly say I don't think I've had an awesome nights sleep since my stroke 3 years ago!

So I found myself extremely tired at 8:30 tonight, so I convinced myself to go to bed, thinking I'm going to get an extremely long and awesome sleep tonight..................NOT!

When I woke up I was almost was excited about how rested I was going to be! Funny, I still feel tired, oh well I'm going to make coffee and start my day.

The real big problem was that it was 11:00 THE SAME NIGHT!

SO HERE I AM BLOGGING AT 12:40am AND I'M NOT THAT TIRED! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

So I'm here to warn you! In your quest to get that much needed sleep, DON'T GO TO BED TO EARLY!

Like me, it may have the opposite effect!

COULD BE WORSE

This morning I was chatting with my sister Jana Bailey our SCSS LICKING COUNTY OHIO CHAPTER OF SECOND CHANCE STROKE SURVIVORS

We have this saying we remind each other all the time .............

How are you today?

"Hey I woke up on the right side of the grass...............Could be worse!"

Ya I have not walked for three years.
I can't talk very well.
I'm paralyzed on my left half of my body.

But you know............ I woke up on the right side of the grass so it could be worse!

Basic but so true!

I'm still alive!

I get to be with the ones I love and hold dear.
I get to see the sunrise.
I get to be with my awesome family!

So yes it could be worse...............I could be dead and not experiencing any awesome thing on this planet.

Don't agree? Than your focusing on the wrong things!

REMINDED OF JUST HOW AWESOME SCSS IS

So I just got offline with a stroke survivor brother in Arizona, talking about some very scary stuff he's dealing with.

Bound as brothers through stroke survival. The bond of energy is awesome! You would never know we are separated by 100's of  miles in two different U.S. states!

IT'S A POWERFUL THING WE'RE DOING AT SECOND CHANCE STROKE SURVIVORS!

WISH SOMEONE TOLD ME

The financial devastation that comes from stroke survival is a given and the thing Rebecca says all the time is: 'I wish someone told me" it takes 6 months for disability payments to kick in!

So if you know of anyone that has recently survived a stroke? Tell them to get in touch with their Hospital Social Worker and request the needed paper to file for disability coverage as soon as possible!

Tips

  • Ask the hospital if they have a patient Social Worker?
  • Fill out and submit all needed paperwork as soon as possible!
  • If your patients advocate keep a journal of information from doctors.
  • Never give up!

Anyone involved with the patient should join Second Chance Stroke Survivors for support and guidance.

Time to Heal

I learned it takes a great deal of time to heal our brain.
I learned that no one can adequately predict our gain.I was told I should choose to sit and just vegetate.I knew I did not want that to be my chosen fate.
I learned moments of discouragement don't last very long.
I learned that adversity is what helps us learn to be strong.
I learned streaming tears did not help me to clearly see.
I learned repetition was the key and well worth the fee.I
learned things that were priceless and that helped ease the pain.I realized wisdom and knowledge would be what helped me gain.
I learned nothing is impossible if we keep trying our best.
I learned that a brain injury journey is a hard life test.
I learned perseverance does pay off in the end.I learned it is a much easier journey when shared with friends.

It Took Time.......

To see humor instead of feel heartache
To see myself living instead of dying
To see joy replace my deepest misery
To see hope instead of hopelessness
To see patience instead of frustration and anger
To see myself react with laughter instead of crying
To see anything positive come out of so much negative
To see I could find new dreams instead of missing lost dreams
To see I could learn self confidence instead of beating myself up
To see I had self worth instead of feeling like an "outsider" looking in!
It took time...........

OBSERVATION - THE AMAZING BRAIN

So I was sitting in the car at the grocery store waiting for Rebecca to do a little shopping. Watching people like I normally do.

I noticed all the people hustling and bustling about their lives. Effortlessly walking, talking and driving, thinking I personally know just how quick their lives can dramatically change! It is no wounder the lightning bolt is the international symbol for stroke. Stroke strikes that fast with cataclysmic results.

I was observing  just how awesome the brain was! How your brain moves the body with such ease that you can't help but take it for granted. I know, I was one of them.

The brain is so amazing it can compensate for it's bodies flaws so we can function. Bad posture, broken foot, age.and much more.

I watch people walking that physically should not be, but our amazing brain tells the body to make the needed corrections so it can walk.

The devastating effect of stroke is it destroys the brains ability to communicate with the body. So now what?

I am currently learning the very basics of our amazing brains ability to re-wire and fully repair itself called Neuroplasticity.

That through only repetition of movement  the brain can and will re-wire itself. Going around the effected or damaged area, making new pathways for neurons to travel on. The scientist all agree that there no easy way to cause neoplastic changes within our brains. The one and only way is  through hard, work commitment and repetition.

You ask how long it takes to see results of Neurplasticity? That varies from stroke survivor to stroke survivor. The worse the damage the longer it takes.

Question, how many of us lost half our brain caused by stroke? None! Can the amazing plastic brain relearn with half of it gone? The answer is yes! See the YouTube video "The girl with half a brain. http://youtu.be/2MKNsI5CWoU

How does your stroke compare to the girl with half her brain?

There is proven hope stroke survivors!
